Harambee.
A next-generation crowdfunding platform designed to democratize capital. Empowering the future.
The Engineering Narrative
Harambee is a modern, high-impact crowdfunding platform engineered specifically for the African ecosystem. I lead the team that built Harambee at InversePay to connect visionary champions with a community of global backers, the application focuses on democratizing capital while maintaining enterprise-grade security. The platform's primary footprint is currently active in East Africa—working seamlessly across Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya. In the immediate roadmap, Harambee will expand its reach into West African markets, including Ghana and Nigeria, with the ultimate vision of serving the entire African continent.
To support such a geographically diverse and financially complex initiative, the backend infrastructure had to be meticulously architected from the ground up. While the Next.js App Router frontend delivers a stunning and highly interactive user experience, the true heartbeat of Harambee lies entirely in the backend API. My primary task was engineering this robust, asynchronous engine that dictates performance, security, and reliability across all core domain modules.
The platform is powered by a high-performance Python 3.11+ stack utilizing FastAPI and Uvicorn for asynchronous execution. For data persistence, I implemented an async SQLAlchemy 2 ORM connected to a PostgreSQL 14+ database, utilizing Alembic for strict migration control. To handle high-throughput operations like JWT blacklisting, rate limiting, and task queues, Redis 7+ serves as the central cache and message broker. The entire ecosystem is fully containerized with Docker, deployed dynamically onto AWS EC2 instances, and managed via automated CI/CD pipelines powered by GitHub Actions.
Because crowdfunding at a continental scale demands uncompromising data integrity, I designed the architecture to handle immense concurrency without faltering. The system seamlessly processes thousands of concurrent background jobs—ranging from complex user KYC validations using Smile ID, to real-time asynchronous notifications dispatched via Firebase Cloud Messaging, Mailgun, and Africa's Talking SMS.
By prioritizing non-blocking I/O and strict separation of concerns through bounded contexts (such as admin reviews, campaign state machines, and trust-score algorithms), Harambee guarantees that whether a campaign goes viral locally or processes an influx of international multi-currency pledges, the system remains entirely unshakeable.

Architectural
Pillars
A deeper look into the interconnected systems that drive trust, scaling, and engagement.
Multi-Currency & Exchange Engine
Engineered a highly resilient financial ledger capable of native currency exchange. The platform aggregates live market rates to dynamically swap currencies across Rwanda (InTouchPay), Uganda (Xente/MoMo), Kenya, and impending Paystack integrations for West Africa, resolving cross-border pledges instantly.
Dynamic Trust Scoring & KYC
Developed a comprehensive Trust Score algorithm that evaluates campaign authenticity and champion history in real-time, paired with a robust Smile ID KYC integration to safeguard backers across multiple jurisdictions.
Campaign Verifications
Built the core logic for multi-stage campaign approvals, rigorous compliance checks, and secure document storage via Cloudinary, ensuring only fully vetted projects reach the public.
Asynchronous Notifications
Implemented a high-throughput, event-driven notification module using Redis brokers. It dispatches critical updates via Push, SMS, and Email instantaneously without blocking the main execution threads.
